Musings -- and occasional polemics -- on politics, policy, foreign relations, civil rights and liberties, the state of the Union and, occasionally, other less weighty things that I feel compelled to write about. -- Bill Patberg, Toledo, Ohio

It's hard to be optimistic about this possibility, Bill. Even if the candidates desired an honest discussion of the issues their professional campaign managers will constantly push for the dumbed-down version that consistently works with the electorate as a whole. Bottom line...they feed us what we (collectively) want. Why would they do anything else?
Details lose campaigns, sadly.
On another note, I'd love to see a Parentheticals post on vouchers, specifically for Medicare.
I've opposed vouchers for private schools because I think they'll become discount coupons for those who can afford private school, draining resources from public schools and hurting those who need universal education.
But for medical care, I'm torn on the voucher issue. Part of me shares a parallel concern to that of education, but part of me thinks that such a large pool of money could lead to cost savings as providers would adapt to get a piece of the pie.
Would love to hear your thoughts.
